Peter J. McDonnell, M.D., a distinguished ophthalmologist and renowned expert in corneal disease and surgery, currently holds the esteemed positions of Director and William Holland Wilmer Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, housed within the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Born with a passion for advancing eye care, Dr. McDonnell embarked on his academic journey by earning his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Dartmouth College. His commitment to the field led him to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1982. Following his medical education, Dr. McDonnell pursued a residency in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Institute, laying the foundation for his specialization in cornea and external diseases.

Dr. McDonnell’s pursuit of excellence continued with a fellowship at the Doheny Eye Institute of the University of Southern California, solidifying his expertise in corneal transplantation, laser refractive surgery, and the treatment of dry eye. His dedication brought him back to the Wilmer Institute, where he initially served as Assistant Chief of Service before transitioning to the University of Southern California’s full-time faculty. There, he climbed the academic ranks, achieving the distinguished title of professor in 1994. In 1999, Dr. McDonnell assumed the role of Irving H. Leopold Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California-Irvine
